With diet-related illness at an all time high, it's not surprising that more and more people are turning to colon cleansing as a way to help them change their eating habits. At the same time cleansing is also helping many to lose unwanted pounds without having to go on a diet and generrally improve their health.

Cleansing the colon is a practice that has a long tradition, stretching all the way back to ancient Egypt. It has been refined and updated signifcantly over the past 100 years and is now generally consdered to be safe.

That said, if you are considering colon cleansing, you should be aware of the risks and how to minimize them. Here is a list of the top 3.

1. Using contaminated water or equipment with enemas or colon hydrotherapy (colonics). If you decide to colon cleanse with either of these approaches you absolutely must insist on using pure water (distilled is best) and 100% sterilized equipment. There have been severe sicknesses reported by people who did not make sure of these two things.

2. Unsafe amounts or combinations of herbs. Some herbs used in colon cleanses are particularly powerful in producing detox reactions like diarrhea and headaches. The two to watch out for the moat are Senna and Cascara Sagrada. Andy cleanse you try should only have small amounts of these herbs.

3. Chemicals or other unsafe ingredients.
